นั่งคุยกับ Alex Rendell ในวันที่ความสนใจด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมของเขาขับเคลื่อนให้เกิดความยั่งยืนในสังคม

จากเด็กชายอเล็กซ์ นักแสดงเด็กที่มีโอกาสได้ถ่ายโฆษณาตั้งแต่ 4 ขวบ ได้เล่นละครตอนอายุ 6 ขวบ จนกระทั่งได้เซ็นสัญญาเข้าสังกัดเป็นนักแสดงของช่อง 3 ตอนอายุ 16 ปี ปัจจุบันเขาเติบโตขึ้นเป็นผู้ใหญ่ที่ชื่ออเล็กซานเดอร์ ไซม่อน เรนเดล (Alexander Simon Rendell) พร้อมกับผลงานในวงการบันเทิงที่มีมาอย่างต่อเนื่องกว่า 26 ปี ซึ่งพิสูจน์ฝีมือความเป็น ‘นักแสดง’ จริงๆ มากกว่าจะเป็นแค่ ‘สตาร์’

ต้องยอมรับว่าการทำงานตั้งแต่เด็กนั้นเป็นสิ่งที่ฝึกฝนวินัยและความรับผิดชอบให้กับอเล็กซ์อย่างมาก เขาไม่ใช่แค่จับพลัดจับผลูเข้ามาอยู่ในวงการบันเทิงเพราะหน้าตาและบุคลิกที่ดูดี แต่ยังสนใจและศึกษาเรื่องศาสตร์การแสดงอย่างจริงจัง มุ่งมั่นจะเป็นนักแสดงที่ดี ทว่าหลังจากจบการศึกษาจากคณะนิเทศศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย หลักสูตรนานาชาติแล้ว อเล็กซ์กลับมีอีกบทบาทหนึ่งเพิ่มเติมขึ้นมา นั่นคือการทำงานด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม อย่างที่เรามักเห็นภาพเขาไปลุยอยู่ตามป่าเขา ทะเล พร้อมกับกลุ่มเด็กๆ ตามหน้าสื่อต่างๆ อยู่บ่อยๆ จนเริ่มเป็นที่จดจำในภาพของนักแสดงที่ใส่ใจเรื่องธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม

                “เร็วๆ นี้ผมกำลังจะมีละครเรื่อง ‘สุดร้ายสุดรัก’ ออกอากาศทางช่อง 3 ครับ แต่อีกด้านก็เป็นผู้บริหาร EEC Thailand (Environmental Education Centre) หรือศูนย์สิ่งแวดล้อมศึกษาประเทศไทย ซึ่งก่อตั้งมาตอนนี้เข้าปีที่ 5 แล้ว” อเล็กซ์ก่อตั้งสำนักงาน EEC ขึ้นในปี 2558 ช่วงแรกมีเขาและคนทำงานอีกแค่ 2 คน แต่ปัจจุบันเป็นบริษัทขนาดกลาง มีพนักงานเต็มครบทุกแผนก และเป็นที่รู้จักกันดีในหน่วยงานหรือองค์กรที่สนใจงานด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมและความยั่งยืน

From his first gig appearing in a commercial at the age of four to his first contract with Channel 3 at sixteen, Alexander Simon Rendell has proved to be a real ‘actor’ rather than simply a ‘star’ for over twenty-six years.

                Having worked since a tremendously young age he has learned discipline and responsibility. He is not in show business by chance because of his looks and personality. He takes an active interest in, and labours over, the craft of acting, being committed to becoming a good actor. And after attaining a degree in Communication Arts (International Programme) from Chulalongkorn University, he has added environmental work into his profile. On celebrity reports, we often see him adventuring up high on hills and out there in the sea with groups of young children. He is now known as an actor who cares for the nature and the environment.

                “My new series ‘Sood Rai Sood Rak’ will be aired on Channel 3 soon. I am also on the board of directors of Environmental Education Centre Thailand which is in the fifth year of its starting.” Rendell co-founded EEC Thailand in 2015. At first, there was just him and two others but it has grown into a medium-sized company at capacity for employment and known for being an establishment with environmental and sustainability concerns.

                “สิ่งที่ EEC ทำคือการมอบองค์ความรู้ให้กับนักเรียน เยาวชน หรือช่วยสร้างกระบวนการ (facilitate) เอาโมเดลของสิ่งแวดล้อมศึกษาไปประยุกต์ใช้กับองค์กรต่างๆ ผ่านกิจกรรมอย่างการจัดค่าย ซึ่งที่ผ่านมาเรามีมา 180 กว่าค่ายแล้ว จัดแทบทุกสัปดาห์เลยในช่วงวีคเอนด์ เรามีผู้เชี่ยวชาญของ EEC เอง ที่คิดหลักสูตรขึ้นมากว่า 20 หลักสูตร ตั้งแต่ค่าย Marine เรื่องท้องทะเล ค่าย Wildlife เรื่องป่า ช้าง กวางผา กล้วยไม้ รวมถึงการไปเรียนรู้คนท้องถิ่น” เขาอธิบาย

                ความสนใจด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมของอเล็กซ์เริ่มต้นตั้งแต่อายุ 10 ขวบเมื่อเขามีโอกาสไปเดินป่ากับครูกต (อลงกต ชูแก้ว) นักอนุรักษ์ช้างไทยซึ่งดูแลศูนย์อนุรักษ์ช้างไทยอยู่ที่เขาใหญ่ และได้ไปช่วยรักษาช้างป่วยในป่า นั่นกลายเป็นเหมือนการปลูกฝังให้เขารู้สึกรัก เข้าใจ และหวงแหนธรรมชาติ เมื่อได้ติดต่อกับครูกตอีกครั้งหลังเรียนจบนิเทศฯ จุฬาฯ เขาจึงออกทริปไปเขาใหญ่แล้วเกิดปิ๊งไอเดียในการก่อตั้ง EEC ทำให้อเล็กซ์ตัดสินใจเบนเข็มมาเรียนต่อปริญญาโทที่คณะมนุษยศาสตร์ สังคมศาสตร์ เอกสิ่งแวดล้อม เพื่อหาความรู้ในเชิงลึกมากขึ้น

                “80% ของคนที่มาค่ายของเราเป็นเยาวชน และส่วนมากจะมากันเป็นครอบครัว พวกเขาได้แรงบันดาลใจและเอาความรู้ไปต่อยอด บอกต่อ บางคนเขียนหนังสือแล้วเอาไปมอบให้กับโรงเรียนต่างๆ บางคนไปสร้างคอมมิวนิตี้ที่เป็นมิตรกับสิ่งแวดล้อมให้กับโรงเรียน หรือแม้แต่เป็นผู้นำทางสิ่งแวดล้อมของครอบครัว กลับบ้านไปเปลี่ยนพฤติกรรมพ่อแม่ เราจึงเป็นเหมือนแพลตฟอร์มสร้างคนมาดูแลธรรมชาติต่อไปครับ” เขาเล่าอย่างภูมิใจ

                “ผมมีความคิดว่าทำอย่างไรก็ได้ที่จะไม่สร้างภาระให้กับธรรมชาติ เวลาเราจะทำหรือตัดสินใจอะไร เราจะนึกถึงความคิดนี้เสมอ มันไม่ใช่ว่าอยู่ๆ วันหนึ่งเราต้องมาเปลี่ยนตัวเองเลิกใช้พลาสติก แต่มันเป็นเพราะว่าเราได้ไปเห็นผลกระทบของพลาสติกด้วยตาตัวเองมาแล้ว มันก็จะรู้สึกไม่อยากใช้พลาสติกไปเอง” เขากับ EEC เดินทางไปมาหลายแห่งในประเทศไทย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเขาใหญ่ ดอยอินทนนท์ แม่สอด เลย หรือแม้แต่เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าฮาลา-บาลาทางภาคใต้ และได้เห็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงของสภาพแวดล้อมของแต่ละที่ ทั้งดีขึ้นและแย่ลง “สถานการณ์ในโลกที่เราเห็นตอนนี้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นไฟป่าในออสเตรเลีย หรือเรื่องมลพิษ มันแสดงให้เห็นว่าปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมไม่ใช่เรื่องไกลตัว วิธีหนึ่งที่จะแก้ปัญหาเรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อมได้คือ ผู้คนต้องยอมออกจากคอมฟอร์ตโซน ช่วงแรกอาจดูหักดิบ แต่ถ้าเราข้ามจุดนี้ไปแล้ว มันจะส่งผลดีในระยะยาว เราไม่ได้กำลังทำเพื่อประโยชน์ส่วนตัวของใครคนใดคนหนึ่ง แต่เราทำเพื่อประโยชน์ส่วนรวมครับ”

               “EEC’s work facilitates young children and students’ learning by using the same model as in environmental study and we have adapted it to suit our attendants through camping. So far, we’ve completed over 180 camps almost every weekend. We have in-house specialists who have drawn up more than twenty programmes. Whether it be marine camp or wildlife camp – learning about elephants, gorals, and orchids – we get to learn about the life of the local communities, too,” he explained.

                Rendell’s interest in the environment was seeded at ten years old when he went on a jungle hike. At that time, he got a chance to help treat an elephant in the jungle of Khao Yai National Park. Love, understanding and care for nature have decidedly grown in him. That trek was led by ‘Kru Kot’ or Dr Alongkot Chukaew, a wildlife conservationist at the Thai Elephant Research and Conservation Fund based in the National Park. Then, he reconnected with Kru Kot after the degree at Chulalongkorn and took another trip to Khao Yai. This time, it gave him the exciting idea of setting up EEC which drove him to a master’s in Environmental Social Sciences to deepen his knowledge.

                “About 80% of those who attend our camps are children and they usually come as a family. Apparently, the children got inspired and put what they learn into practice. Some told their friends about us. Some also wrote a book about it and gave them away to schools. Others tried to build an environmentally friendly community in the school and even became an environmental leader in their own family by trying to persuade their parents to change their behavior. It’s almost like we provide a platform for those who will care for the future of nature,” he proudly told us.

                “I am committed to the thought of relieving the burden on nature. Whatever choice I make, I am aware of this conviction. It’s not the case where, out of the blue, I decided to refuse getting single-use plastic bags. It’s because I’ve witnessed the effects of them with my own eyes, so my conscience doesn’t allow me to use them.” Rendell has been to many places in Thailand with EEC – Khao Yai, Doi Inthanon National Park, Mae Sot, Loei, and Hala-Bala – a wildlife sanctuary in Thailand, etc. He’s seen them undergo a change – either for the better or for the worse. “The conditions in our world now, from bushfires in Australia to the smog in Bangkok, confirm that environmental problems are not something far-off. One way to take us out of this trouble is that people must break their habit. Sure, it’s going to feel like cold turkey at first. But as we go past a certain phase, it will be evident how it’s better for us in the long run. We’re not doing this just for any one person but for the public.”

                ความคิดเรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อมของอเล็กซ์แทรกซึมอยู่ในไลฟ์สไตล์ในชีวิตประจำวันของเขาไปแล้ว สังเกตได้จากของที่เลือกใช้ไปจนถึงเสื้อผ้าที่สวมใส่ “การแต่งตัวของผมเรียบง่ายมาก สีสันไม่ค่อยหวือหวา เน้นเรื่องความสบายในการสวมใส่เป็นหลัก ถ้าใส่ไม่สบาย ต่อให้สวยแค่ไหนก็ไม่ซื้อ เพราะผมเป็นคนเดินทางเยอะครับ มันต้องสบายตัว ส่วนสิ่งที่ขาดไม่ได้เลยคือนาฬิกา เพราะว่าทำอะไรเยอะ ชีวิตต้องขึ้นอยู่กับเวลาตลอด พอไม่ใส่จะรู้สึกโล่งๆ ไงไม่รู้” เขาพูดพลางโชว์นาฬิกาเรือนโปรดบนข้อมืออย่าง ‘ไบรทลิ่ง ซูเปอร์โอเชียน เฮอริเทจ คอนเซอร์แวนซี ลิมิเต็ด เอดิชั่น’

                “ผมชอบไบรทลิ่งอยู่แล้วครับ เป็นแบรนด์แรกๆ ที่รู้จักเลย ตอนเด็กๆ ครูสอนเทควันโดเขามีนาฬิกาไบรทลิ่งอยู่เรือนหนึ่ง จำได้ว่าเราเห็นแล้วรู้สึกว่าสวย และพอมารู้ทีหลังว่าเป็นนาฬิกาที่ถูกออกแบบมาสำหรับนักบิน ยิ่งรู้สึกว่าเท่มาก ส่วนรุ่นซูเปอร์โอเชียนที่ผมใส่นี่เป็นรุ่นพิเศษ ลิมิเต็ด เอดิชั่น ออกแบบมาโดยคำนึงถึงสิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นสำคัญ สายนาโตทำจากด้ายอีโคนิล ซึ่งเป็นนวัตกรรมวัสุดที่ทำจากขยะไนลอน โดยเฉพาะอวนจับปลาเก่าจากท้องทะเลแห่งต่างๆ ทั่วโลก มันมีความทนทานสูงแล้วก็ยังนำไปรีไซเคิลใหม่ได้ไม่จำกัด ทำให้เวลาผมไปบรรยายเรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อม ผมสามารถบอกได้ว่านี่คืออีกหนึ่งตัวอย่างของการใช้ประโยชน์กับขยะ” เขายังแอบเกริ่นถึงอีกรุ่นที่อยากได้ด้วย นั่นคือ “‘อะเวนเจอร์’ เป็นอีกรุ่นที่ผมอยากจะซื้อครับ แต่ยังไม่เข้าเมืองไทยเลย อยากได้นาฬิกาไว้ใส่เข้าป่ารุ่นหนึ่ง และก็ใส่ไปทะเลรุ่นหนึ่ง

                แล้วอเล็กซ์ชอบป่าหรือทะเลมากกว่ากัน “ผมชอบชายเลนครับ มันเป็นจุดเชื่อมต่อระหว่างภูเขากับทะเล เพราะเป็นแหล่งกำเนิดของปลาหลายชนิด เป็นแหล่งอนุบาลของสัตว์ ไม่ค่อยมีคลื่นแต่ก็มีต้นไม้อุดมสมบูรณ์ เลยรู้สึกว่าเป็นพื้นที่ที่ต้องรักษามากๆ ถ้าตรงนี้พัง มันก็พังไปทั้งหมด” เขาเอ่ยต่อถึงโปรเจ็กต์ล่าสุดในปี 2563 ที่ชื่อว่า ‘กอดป่า กอดทะเล’ ซึ่งจะขยายโอกาสการเรียนรู้ทางสิ่งแวดล้อมไปยังเด็กๆ ในทุกพื้นที่ จากเดิมที่มักจะมีเฉพาะในกรุงเทพฯ หรือเด็กที่มีความพร้อมทางการศึกษาและครอบครัว อีกทั้งยังมีความตั้งใจจะก่อตั้งมูลนิธิอีกด้วย

                “ผมพยายามเต็มที่กับทุกอย่างให้ดีที่สุด ฉะนั้นการแบ่งเวลาจึงเป็นสิ่งสำคัญมาก ถ้าเราบริหารเวลาไม่ได้ โปรเจ็กต์หรือสิ่งต่างๆ ที่เราอยากทำ มันไม่เกิดขึ้นแน่นอนครับ ทุกคนมีเวลาของตัวเองเท่ากัน เราจะบริหารเวลาอย่างไรให้มันเป็นประโยชน์กับตัวเราและคนรอบข้างมากที่สุด” อเล็กซ์ตั้งเป้าหมายอยากจะสร้างองค์กรให้แข็งแรง เขาไม่ได้แค่กำลังสร้างความยั่งยืนให้กับชีวิตของเขาเองทั้งในพาร์ตของงานแสดงและงานสิ่งแวดล้อมเท่านั้น แต่เขากำลังสร้างคนที่จะเติบโตมาเป็นคนที่มีคุณภาพในวันข้างหน้าและพัฒนาสังคมของเราได้ด้วย สิ่งเหล่านี้ต่างหากคือความยั่งยืนที่แท้จริง

Rendell’s care for the environment has permeated through his daily life. It’s clear in what he uses and wears. “I like my clothes simple, nothing colorful. I prefer something easy. If not, I won’t buy it even though it looks really nice. I travel a lot so it has to be comfortable. However, one thing that I can’t do without is a watch. As I do many things in a day, my life depends on time. It feels missing when I’m not wearing it.” he said while showing us his favorite watch on his wrist, a Breitling Superocean Heritage Ocean Conservancy limited edition.

                “I have always been attracted to Breitling. It’s one of the first brands I knew. When I was a kid, my taekwondo instructor was wearing a Breitling and I remember thinking it was beautiful. Then when I learned that their watches were designed for pilots, I found them even more attractive. This model I’m wearing, Superocean, is a limited edition devoting itself into building better environment for our earth. It comes with a Nato strap made from Econyl yarns. It is an innovative recycled material made of nylon rubbish, especially fishing nets left beneath the oceans. They are very durable and indefinitely recyclable. When I give a talk on the environment, I can sometimes use this as an example of waste that can be reprocessed.” He also mentioned another model that he likes, “Avenger is another one that I have my eyes on but it’s not imported into the country yet. I want one for wearing to the mountains and one for wearing to the sea.”

                But is he a mountain or a beach person? “I love mangroves. They’re the link of the two worlds and home to many fishes. With fewer and smaller waves and plenty of trees, they nurture many kinds of marine life. So it seems that these forests have to be particularly guarded. For if they were to be destroyed, the entire ecosystem could go with them.” Rendell also spoke of his latest project in 2020, ‘Kod Pa Kod Talay’ (‘giving a hug to the mountains and the sea’), which would open up a learning opportunity to children outside the capital city and who may not have been in a privileged position. He also expressed his determination to set up an environmental foundation.

                “I try to do everything with my absolute best. And time management is key. If we can’t manage time, whatever projects we hope to accomplish are not going to happen. We all have twenty-four hours but the question is how we should organise it so that it could benefit yourself and others.” Rendell intends to keep building up the organisation he has helped start. He is not simply making his acting and activist career grow. In fact, he is creating quality human resources that will develop our society in the future. This kind of growth is true sustainability.
